In collaboration with Forviva, Knauf Energy Solutions implemented a Smart Retrofit programme for 12 nearly new homes in Eccles, UK, constructed in 2014. This project demonstrated the transformative potential of rigorous quality assurance and energy performance monitoring in driving measurable energy savings.
What We Did
Smart Retrofit Implementation:
-Retrofits were conducted on properties featuring partial fill foam board cavity wall insulation, mineral wool loft insulation (200–300mm), and Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) systems.
-Insulation was upgraded to a holistic system, including glass mineral wool cavity insulation, Knauf Insulation’s Loft System, and correctly commissioned PIV systems.
-Airtightness was improved, reducing test results from 7.1–11.6 m³/h/m² @50Pa pre-retrofit to 5.8–10.7 m³/h/m² @50Pa post-retrofit.
Data-Driven Monitoring:
-Installed a suite of sensors to capture in-use data.
-Measured Space Heating Demand (SHD) before and after the retrofit to assess improvements based on actual energy performance, independent of occupant behaviour.
The Value We Delivered
1. Significant Energy Savings:
a. Achieved an average energy performance improvement of 17%,representing a combined saving of 7,123 kWh across all 12 homes.
b. For the average household, this equates to a monetary saving of £295per year.
2. Enhanced Energy Efficiency:
a. Delivered a smarter, more robust insulation system that maximized the efficiency of building fabric while improving airtightness for better thermal performance.
3. Evidence-Based Results:
a. Demonstrated the value of measured in-use data to arrive at a precise measured space heating demand caused by the house itself rather than occupant behaviour.
